Norway travel money tips
Heading to Norway? Here's a quick rundown of how to handle money on the ground — tipping etiquette, when to use cards versus cash, the best ATMs to use, and the most common pitfalls travelers run into. The local currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK, kr).
Tipping
Not expected. Round up the bill or leave 5–10% for great service.
Cards vs cash
Effectively cashless. Tap-to-pay works everywhere, including remote ferry terminals.

ATMs & cash tip
DNB and Nordea ATMs are reliable. ATMs are getting harder to find — many were removed as cash use dropped.
Heads-up
- Norway is very expensive — budget NOK 250–350 for a basic restaurant main and NOK 100–150 for a beer.
- Buy alcohol at duty-free or Vinmonopolet — supermarkets only sell beer, and only until 8 PM weekdays / 6 PM Saturdays.
About the Norwegian Krone (NOK)
